Communication is Key: Buying a Vehicle Online
Over the last several years, the internet has made life much easier for the consumer. Everything from books and movies to clothing and art supplies can be purchased from a home computer. Not only is it convenient to buy online, but it’s often less expensive. With lower overhead costs, online retailers and wholesalers are able to pass discounts along to their customers.
This is especially true when purchasing a vehicle. Online dealerships and individual sellers are almost always willing to work with potential buyers. This means a consumer can often purchase a vehicle online for less money, with less paperwork, and less hassle than we’ve come to expect from a standard auto dealership.
Yet, as with any new medium for commerce, it helps to be cautious when shopping. Following a few simple ground rules will help ensure that purchases are made safely and efficiently.

1. Know what you want – Remember, when shopping for a vehicle online you don’t have a salesperson to tell you what kind of vehicle you want, and pressuring you to buy. It’s all up to you. This means you’ll have to do a little research. What kind of car are you in the market for? Do you need a large SUV for family camping trips? Or are you in the market for something sleek and sporty? The most you know about the type and/or model of vehicle you’re looking for, the better. When doing your homework, it’s best to use third party sources for information. The Kelly Blue Books, Consumer Reports, and Autocheck are all great places to start.
2. Know your seller – Not all online dealerships are created equal. If you’re reading this newsletter, you’ve already found the best place to begin searching for the used vehicle of your dreams. Some of our clients are individual sellers, and others are professional auto dealers tapping into the online market. We provide free autocheck reports for our vehicles, and our Customer Service Department is fully trained to assist our clients, as well as potential buyers with every aspect of the sale, from financing and warranties to worldwide shipping. This means when you purchase a vehicle through one of our advertisements, you can do so with confidence!
3. Communicate! – This is probably the most important aspect of buying online: good communication. Both parties should be in contact through the entire process of the sale. This helps to build trust between the buyer and seller. Good communication also ensures that the sale moves quickly and fairly, with both parties receiving what was agreed upon.
As long as you shop with intelligence and a bit of common sense, buying a vehicle online can be a rewarding experience, and great way to save time and money. It’s also nice being able to shop for that perfect sports car from an inventory of millions!

Consumer Reports Top Picks 2008
Each year ConsumerReports.org produces its influential best-of auto report. Their “Top Picks” reads like a who’s-who of the global automotive market. The list is broken up into ten categories ranging including Small Sedan, Minivan, Fun to Drive, etc. Vehicles are chosen based on stringent road test, safety, and reliability requirements.
While Japanese manufacturers still dominate the listings, with old hats like Toyota and Honda continuing to set the bar for the industry, this year’s list did hold a few surprises. For the first time since 2005, a U.S. model, the Chevrolet Silverado, was chosen as the top pickup. South Korean automaker Hyundai is represented for the first time ever with the Elantra SE and Santa Fe capturing the Small Sedan and Midsized SUV categories.
ConsumerReports.org is widely recognized as maintaining a high standard in the quality and objectivity of their product reviews. For individuals doing research before purchasing a vehicle, their annual auto report is certainly a good place to start!
